Moxibustion is a relaxing therapeutic method that uses the burning of herbs (Artemisia argyi) over the acupuncture point or the affected area to produce a warm stimulation of the patient. The radiant heat produced by the burning herbs penetrates deeply into the body where normal physical massage cannot reach. This then restores the balance and flow of vital energy or life force (qi or ch’i).Moxibustion is promoted for improving general health and help chronic conditions such as arthritis, digestive disorders, and ulcers by restoring normal flow of enegy. It is often used with the acupuncture needle to enhance the effect. In fact, the Chinese word that typically gets translated as acupuncture, zhenjiǔ, actually means “acupuncture and moxibustion.” Acupuncturists use moxa to warm the body and bring more qi and blood flow to an area. Moxa typically is applied to places where there is pain or energy trap, or where the body feels cold. Moxa can be used to strengthen the immune system as well.
